Schoenberg: The store and the guitar

Posted on 22 August 2008 by beyond

I had the good fortune to pay a repeat visit to Schoenberg Guitars in Tiburon, CA yesterday. (I visited a few years ago on an earlier trip to the Bay Area.) What a lovely little store! Eric and James graciously allowed me to play anything and everything I desired, and I used the opportunity to sample nearly all of the Schoenberg brand guitars in the shop, as well as a few Martins, two Merrill OMs, a Klepper, and an Osthoff. (Somehow, I neglected to try the McCollum and Laskin guitars on hand). The Merrill OM-28 I tried was terrific, while the Merrill OM-18 didn’t impress me as much as the example of that model I bought from Schoenberg last year. But the real stars of the show for me were all of the Schoenberg brand guitars. I played a 1988 OM in Engelmann/Brazilian of Bourgeois/Martin lineage, as well as some newer Schoenbergs made by Bruce Sexauer and Robert Anderson. Every single one was a fingerpicker’s dream. If I had to chose a favorite, the best I could do is narrow it down to these two: (1) a 13-fret 00C in Carpathian spruce and black cocobolo and (2) an 00C Soloist in Carpathian spruce and quartersawn Brazilian in an amberburst finish. Both guitars absolutely sang and played beautifully up and down the neck. Alas, I’m not in the market for any guitar (much less one in the $9K-$12K range). But if I were and I had the bucks, I might well have walked out of there with one of those beauties. Schoenberg’s is a wonderful shop in a lovely town, and I highly recommend that you pay them a visit if you’re in the area. You’ll be glad you did (particularly if you’re a fingerpicker). Marshall

MarinIJ: Tiburon rolls out red carpet for art festival

Posted on 20 August 2008 by beyond

With only about one month left to summer, the second annual Tiburon Art Festival promises to keep the warm-weather fun going a while longer.Art, music, drinks and face painting are all in the plans for the two-day event on Aug. 23-24. For six months, more than 75 volunteers have been working to create an expanded version of last year’s festivities. Overall, the goal of the festival is for Bay Area residents to relax and rediscover what Tiburon has to offer.

“We’re here to show off beautiful Tiburon and to have people take advantage of the waterfront, the restaurants and the shops,” said festival co-chair Carolyn Wendler. “We really just want people to come and enjoy the town.”

At the 2007 festival, about 2,000 people walked along historic Ark Row and discovered the talents of artists from all over the Bay Area. Though the festival was deemed successful, this year organizers are hoping to liven up downtown Tiburon even more with a larger variety of musical groups, drinks and artists.

Painters, sculptors, wood workers, photographers, jewelry makers and glass workers were all hand selected in June by judges Apsara DiQuinzio, the assistant curator of painting and sculpture at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Phillip Linhares, chief curator of art at the Oakland Museum of California. This year, a diverse group of 64 artists is expected to exhibit work alongside some new, family-friendly attractions.

At the north end of the street, kids can get their face painted and watch magic shows while on the South End Patio they can find art projects for more hands-on fun. Throughout the weekend, four bands will play music ranging from jazz to R&B to country.

Dimmi Liquore Name Change Success (from Veloce)

Posted on 13 August 2008 by beyond

The name change to DIMMI (tell me) has been successful and business with Bock Wine and Spirits in California is growing everyday. Dimmi is an important modifying spirit in 20 current cocktails in the San Francisco Bay Area and our “Milan Delight” is expanding into the exciting Napa Valley, Sacramento and Southern California markets through Bock where more cocktails using Dimmi are forth coming. Last week Neyah White of NOPA in SF featured Dimmi in his Petaler cocktail at GV Hurley’s in the midtown neighborhood of Sacramento with excellent fan fare. Several well known SF mixologists were in Sacramento for Cocktail Week sharing their knowledge.

The mantra I have been faithfully using since I founded Liquore Di Milano in 2005 is WINE, FOOD AND SPIRITS, all coming together under one umbrella for young consumers in America. A wonderful cocktail created by a knowledgeable mixologist, a superb wine and some great food from the kitchen is a luxury that is enjoyable, interesting, educational and affordable.

Please review http://www.dimmispirits.com/ <http://www.dimmispirits.com/> and if your DIMMI cocktail is not yet listed “DIMMI” immediately and I will make the addition. If you have personal comments you would like me to post with your creation I would be happy to do that as well on the site. The more personal recognition the better!

Make a note, my email address is below (I’ve closed the turrini.com address now that Dimmi Spirits is solidified)

Best regards,

Stefano

…My husband flew in on August 3, and we spent four glorious days in Marin Country, located just over the Golden Gate Bride. He’s from San Francisco, and we visited family in San Rafael, which is always a treat. We also hit our favorite Marin spots. Lunch in Sausalito, on the bay with a breathtaking view of SF, is always our first stop. We spent a day in Napa and an afternoon in Tiburon, where we always have lunch on the water at Sam’s. Two giant jellyfish, each at least a foot in diameter, swam by. Glad I was sitting on the dock and not in the water. We also toured a delightful museum that had been the office and home of the Tiburon railroad and shipping dock engineer…

La Magia is located directly above the Romanesque abbey of Sante Antimo. This means that it not only has one of the best areas for its vineyards, but also enjoys one of the most beautiful views of Montalcino. The farm is family run by the Schwarz, originally from South Tyrol. Avoiding the use of chemical substances on the vine, a healthier soil. The Schwartz family believes and a lower quantity of production, with a very high concentrated yield. The same principals are followed in winemaking, where a technological advanced system is used. The farm owns 52 hectares, 16 of which are dedicated to a highly specialized vineyard. The products of this land, all of very high quality are Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino , a small quantity of Rose table wine and extra virgin olive oil from first pressing.

In 2003, the property was purchased by Andrea and Hannes Gamon of Austria together with Silvia and Max Hernandez of Spain with the vision to produce 1st class wines, derived from a common passion.

Roberto Cipresso
Not every terrior fits into another, but with patience and consistency, almost like a zealot in a sect, Cipresso has now found a way to pursue his philosophy. As part of his discoveries, two other wines emerged; Pigreco and Eureka. Formed from discoveries along the way, a red blend and single vineyard bottling, respectively, are also products of his experiments.
His goal for each vintage of Quadratura del Cerchio is to continue to combine compatible terriors wherever they are- Sicily + Piedmont, Tuscany + Puglia….the options are endless, as long as they blend together to form the solution of the problem…..La Quadratura del Cerchio. By experimenting and blending form year to year, the exciting wines of Roberto Cipresso are a platform for uninhibited winemaking, the passion of Roberto Cipresso.

$5,000 Offered for Counterstamped Coin

Posted on 07 August 2008 by beyond

Kagin’s, Inc. is offering a $5,000 finder’s fee reward for confirmation of the second known gold coin counterstamped with the genuine hallmark of Baltimore silversmith Standish Barry. The only coin now known with the hallmark is the unique 1735 imitation Lima 8 escudos that was found in the collection of Baltimore banker Louis E. Eliasberg Sr.Announcement of the finder’s reward was made by Donald H. Kagin, president of Kagin’s, when he displayed the counterstamped doubloon at the American Numismatic Association World’s Fair of Money convention.”This is the first time it has been back in Baltimore since Eliasberg’s world coin collection was sold in a public auction in 2005,” Kagin said. The imitation Lima 8 escudos has two identical “SB” counterstamps on the reverse, the same oval-shaped hallmark design as found on various early American silverware produced in Barry’s Baltimore workshop.”Currently, the doubloon is the only coin we know that was countermarked by Barry. There are a small number of 1790-dated Standish Barry three-pence pieces known, but those were struck from regular dies by Barry, and not countermarked,” explained David McCarthy, Kagin’s senior numismatist and researcher.”We will pay $5,000 just to be the first to see the first, new, authentic Standish Barry countermarked gold coin, and $1,000 per additional piece that may turn up,” said McCarthy. “We also will pay $1,000 for the first, genuine silver countermarked piece, and $500 for additional one.”Eliasberg obtained the unrecorded, unique reeded-cast imitation Lima doubloon from the John Clapp estate in 1942. It remained unpublished until 2004. Since then it has been compared to the famous Brasher Doubloons produced in New York City by silversmith Ephraim Brasher. Both types of coins weigh 17 Pennyweights (or 26.42 grams) and were valued at $15.For more information, contact Kagin’s by writing 98 Main St., Suite 201, Tiburon, CA 94920, by phone at (415) 435-2601, or online at www.kagins.com.
