Angel Island Fire

Posted by Robert James On October - 20 - 2008ADD COMMENTS

On Sunday evening, October 12, 2008, a fire started around 8:30 pm on Angel Island. Fire response started quickly, but the fire eventually spread to over 300 acres of the park’s 740 acres and seriously threatened historic buildings at Camp Reynolds on the west side (Civil War era buildings, of which a few have been restored) and at Fort McDowell on the east side (WWI and later buildings, many of which currently serve as park staff housing). The response by local firefighters, CalFire, and park staff saved all structures except one abandoned water tank. As of Thursday, Oct. 16, there were still fire-fighters and ‘hot spots’ on the island.

Several local papers have great stories and photos about the efforts and results of the fight.

The Marin Independent Journal

San Francisco Chronicle

Various reports we have found say that the animals on the island mostly survived. There was one report of one raccoon dying, but no deer carcasses were found as of Wednesday, so it is likely that the herd of about 60 deer made it to safety and until the rains come this winter, when the island will green up, they will probably have enough to eat in the unburned areas. As it is not nesting season, there was no evidence of bird deaths either.

By day’s end on Monday, the fire was 90% contained. However, the landscape has been dramatically altered, especially the view from the south side. Photos shown here document the challenge and the efforts to save Angel Island. Click on any photo with a colored border for a larger version.

If you have a photo you would like to submit for consideration, please send it to webm@angelisland.org.

Town of Tiburon Angel Island Fire update

Posted by beyond On October - 13 - 2008ADD COMMENTS

Special Bulletin – Angel Island Fire Update

I’m very pleased to report that the Angel Island Fire has been 90% contained.  There was no loss of life, no injuries and no structures were lost.  Approximately 380 acres were burned.

Paradise Drive is expected to be reopened this evening by 9:00 p.m.  It may be subject to intermittent closures tomorrow, as firefighters and equipment will continue to come and go from the area until the fire is completely extinguished.  The eastern side of the island is badly charred from this incident; the Tiburon-facing front escaped the worst of the damage.

Our heartfelt thanks go to the Tiburon Fire District, CalFire (California Department of Forestry), the Southern Marin Fire District, the Coast Guard, Fire Departments from Larkspur, Mill Valley, San Rafael, Novato, Marinwood and the State Parks Department.  They did a tremendous job containing this fire and preventing a larger conflagration.

I also want to thank the Tiburon and Belvedere Police Departments and the Tiburon and Marin County Public Works Departments for their vital assistance.  Thanks, too, go to the Angel Island Ferry for providing critically needed transportation.

Unless a very unexpected shift in fortunes occurs, this situation will continue to wind down and no further updates will be forthcoming.

With gratitude,
Peggy Curran
Town Manager

Angel Island Fire – Town of Tiburon Announcement

Posted by beyond On October - 13 - 2008ADD COMMENTS

 Angel Island Fire
As most of you know by now, Angel Island, part of the incorporated Town of Tiburon, is engulfed in a fire that started at approximately 9:00 p.m. last evening.  The fire is only partially contained on the island; it is not expected to expand beyond the island.  Our local Fire District has been battling the fire, and firefighters have been brought in from around the area to help fight the blaze.  The Tiburon Police Department is providing support services, including routing and managing traffic.  There has been no loss of life, and saving the historic structures on the island is a high priority.  A State of Emergency has been declared in Tiburon in response to the situation.

Please avoid driving your vehicles into downtown Tiburon.  Paradise Drive between Main Street and Mar West is closed to traffic.  Firefighters are using Paradise Drive as a staging area, and the media is also stationed there with their vehicles.  If you need access to the ferries or downtown businesses, please park some distance away and walk in, being careful to obey any and all restrictions, such as cordoned off areas, and all instructions from Police and other authorized personnel.
Fire helicopters are aiding the battle.  Some can only use fresh water and will be drawing from land locations, including the marsh behind Town Hall.
This message will be updated periodically, as the fire is expected to continue for at least another day before being fully extinguished.

Thank you.
Peggy Curran
Town Manager

Tiburon Film Society: Na Kamalei: The Men of Hula

Na Kamalei: The Men of Hula
The Tiburon Film Society will present the following film at the Bay Model located at 2100 Bridgeway in Sausalito [Phone: (415) 332.3871] on Thursday, October 2, 2008 @ 6 PM.
Running Time: 57 minutes
Country: USA
Genre: Documentary
Director: Lisette Marie Flanary
Description: Hula usually brings to mind hip-swaying girls in grass skirts and coconut bras. Kaualena Flanary’s film may have the grass skirts but the hips aren’t quite so rounded and there’s no need for the coconuts. Na Kamalei: The Men of Hula follows Hawaii’s oldest all-male hula group as they prepare to compete in the world’s largest hula festival. Robert Cazimero, the group’s leader for 30 years, has played a major role in the resurgence of Hawaiian cultural pride and the repossession of masculinity in hula. His group has also had a major impact on the lives of his students – as revealed in their candid talks to camera. Full of laughter and emotion, an award-winning film with a pahu-pounding finale.
Awards:
- Audience Award – Best Documentary/Hawaii Film and Videomakers Award, Hawaii International Film Festival
-
Comcast
Audience Award (Documentary), San Francisco Asian American Film Festival
- Special Jury Prize, VC FilmFestLos Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival
