Na Kamalei: The Men of Hula
The Tiburon Film Society will present the following film at the Bay Model located at 2100 Bridgeway in Sausalito [Phone: (415) 332.3871] on Thursday, October 2, 2008 @ 6 PM.
Running Time: 57 minutes
Country: USA
Genre: Documentary
Director: Lisette Marie Flanary
Description: Hula usually brings to mind hip-swaying girls in grass skirts and coconut bras. Kaualena Flanary’s film may have the grass skirts but the hips aren’t quite so rounded and there’s no need for the coconuts. Na Kamalei: The Men of Hula follows Hawaii’s oldest all-male hula group as they prepare to compete in the world’s largest hula festival. Robert Cazimero, the group’s leader for 30 years, has played a major role in the resurgence of Hawaiian cultural pride and the repossession of masculinity in hula. His group has also had a major impact on the lives of his students – as revealed in their candid talks to camera. Full of laughter and emotion, an award-winning film with a pahu-pounding finale.
Awards:

-
Comcast
Audience Award (Documentary), San Francisco Asian American Film Festival
- Special Jury Prize, VC FilmFestLos Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival
