Angel Island Fire
As most of you know by now, Angel Island, part of the incorporated Town of Tiburon, is engulfed in a fire that started at approximately 9:00 p.m. last evening. The fire is only partially contained on the island; it is not expected to expand beyond the island. Our local Fire District has been battling the fire, and firefighters have been brought in from around the area to help fight the blaze. The Tiburon Police Department is providing support services, including routing and managing traffic. There has been no loss of life, and saving the historic structures on the island is a high priority. A State of Emergency has been declared in Tiburon in response to the situation.
Please avoid driving your vehicles into downtown Tiburon. Paradise Drive between Main Street and Mar West is closed to traffic. Firefighters are using Paradise Drive as a staging area, and the media is also stationed there with their vehicles. If you need access to the ferries or downtown businesses, please park some distance away and walk in, being careful to obey any and all restrictions, such as cordoned off areas, and all instructions from Police and other authorized personnel.
Fire helicopters are aiding the battle. Some can only use fresh water and will be drawing from land locations, including the marsh behind Town Hall.
This message will be updated periodically, as the fire is expected to continue for at least another day before being fully extinguished.
Thank you.
Peggy Curran
Town Manager
