The benefits of free association are not so far-fetched–the planets and the sun may not be a perfect analogy for an atom, but the idea has certainly inspired the scientific imagination. The same is true of the computer chip. When Intel commissioned artist Daniel Beyer to create a vision of a city scape as an analogy for the microprocessor he rendered more than just urban blocks resembling etchings on silicon. His mural, which has been compared to M. C. Escher’s “Metamorphosis,” hums with life and conveys the development of microprocessor technology. In this video, Beyer discusses his ideas and his creative process. The animated mural was commissioned to coincide with the launch of the Westmere family of chips.
