Announcing the launch of Marin Luxury Real Estate
The definitive Marin Luxury Real Estate web site!

Some guy blasted me during a panel discussion today that happens from time to time. I upset him by suggesting that “successful entrepreneurship” is ultimately about returning investor capital provided we raised capital. We can put a good team and product and business model together and we can make a good contribution to society but, if we haven’t performed for our investors, we’re still running something that could return less money than invested and therefore something “unsuccessful”.
Most Venture Capitalists lost money for five straight years (many for the last ten years) yet the media still confirms a private company is worth e.g. $60M because a VC just invested $20M when the reality is the company is likely worth $18M. The Internal Revenue Service language about Fair Market Value involves “willing buyers and sellers” but the VCs are not willing buyers -they’re forced to act or close their doors these days.
So, yes, guy who blasted me today, I know you have grown your company to be larger than anything I have created but you have not yet returned money to your investors. Comparing our revenue run rates to assess value is as meaningless as comparing the stock price of one publicly traded company versus another.
How much have we raised from investors? How much have we returned to investors? How long did it take?
