Did you know you can visit most of the city’s major museums for free every month? Just about all museums have one day a month set aside as a free day. They all aren’t on the same day, too, so if you plan it right you can take in several museum outings without having to pay a thing.
Note that most museums still charge for special exhibitions, although usually your general admission fee will be deducted from the total.

The Parents Center is moving! Offering support, advice, information, and activities for parents, parents-to-be, and young children, the Parents Center moves out of its original home in San Rafael’s Heller’s children’s store and relocates after a brief hiatus to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Marin in Terra Linda. The Parents Place will operate out of Heller’s until May 5, and programs start again at the new location on May 18, starting with Little Music Circle. Little Music Circle, taught by Parents Center founder and program director Georgia Montgomery, has the distinction of being the only program of its kind in Marin where families only pay for classes they attend (make-up classes can be attended at any time); drop-ins are welcome, too.
Their drop-in New Moms Support Group, with a breastfeeding and newborn care specialist facilitating, begins May 31 and continues on Tuesdays at 11 am. The Parents Center also offers infant/child CPR and choke-saving classes, as well as other special programs througout the year. Check their website for schedule and registration information.

In the spring, lovers of wildlife and wildflowers head to the Point Reyes National Seashore to experience the area’s abundance of both. One of our go-to spots for an outdoors outing in Point Reyes is Chimney Rock, where you can see both masses of amazing widlflowers and massive Northern Elephant Seals lounging on the beach below the cliffs. Also worth visiting here is the historic Chimney Rock Lifeboat Station, where Coast Guard crews set out to rescue victims of the many shipwrecks off the coast of Point Reyes.
If you visit Chimney Rock in the late winter or spring, your first destination upon arrival should be the Elephant Seal Overlook. It’s a short hike on a well maintained gravel trail overlooking Drakes Bay, about 1/2 mile round trip between the parking area and the overlook. The overlook at the end of the trail gives you an unsurpassed view of the Elephant Seal colony on the beach below. While mid-April is considered the end of the Elephant Seal season in Point Reyes, there were still hundreds of the enormous pinnipeds (mostly juveniles) on the beach and in the water. It’s quite a sight, so make sure you bring your binoculars. Docents are on hand at the overlook with binoculars and spotting scopes from 11 am to 4 pm on weekends and holidays late December through April.

Like Tennessee Valley further to the south, Phoenix Lake is one of Marin’s most popular spots for outdoor recreation. Located on Marin Municipal Water District watershed lands, Phoenix Lake sits at the base of Mt. Tamalpais near the town of Ross. It’s a great place for a family hike or bike ride with small children, as the trails that lead to the lake and ring it have gentle slopes and relatively short distances that are manageable by most. There are also numerous more challenging trails accessible from Phoenix lake that are sure to please more advanced hikers or mountain bikers. You’ll see a lot of people running and walking dogs (on-leash dogs are allowed on trails) as well as hiking and mountain biking.
